Smart, Pretty & Awkward

How to be Smarter: Don’t let the amount of time you dread the task take longer than the task itself.

How to be Prettier: This entire site has beautiful earrings made especially for women with sensitive ears. I often wear dangly earrings at night as they are one of the easiest ways to go from a day look to a fancier look, and the long shape balances out my round face nicely. The particular pair I just linked to is mixed metals, which I love.

How to be (less) Awkward: If a hair stylist starts cutting and they are not doing what you had in mind, speak up after one or two snips. They will (usually) be happy to explain their methodology, and you can correct-course if it is not what you had in mind. Better to say something early on in the appointment, rather than leave feeling unhappy with the way your hair turned out. A simple, “may I see how much you’re cutting?” is usually all it takes for them to show you what they are doing.

  1. I have sensitive ears and I’m definitely checking out that site!

About the haircut: this is a great tip and hopefully will help other women avoid learning this lesson the hard way like I did! Two years ago I briefly discussed with my stylist the possibility of a chin-length bob before opting for just a trim. Or so I thought! I spoke up about 3 snips too late about the 6 inches she was taking off!

Two years later it’s back to where I had it that day….finally!!

Totally with you on the Smarter! I call these dreadful tasks “List Demons” and blogged about my experience with them here: http://thepocketchronicles.blogspot.com/2011/02/list-demons.html

For me, it works best if I minimize my to-do list to include only the dreaded items and then give myself a deadline. And a reward upon completion doesn’t hurt, either :-)

Your “Smarter” today is absolutely brilliant. It’s one of those things you know, but hearing (or seeing) someone else say it makes it really hit home. And thanks to you, I just made my doctor appointment that I’ve been putting off for months!

I’m definitely going to have to start using that awkward tip. I have a different problem, I think, to a lot of girls, in that hairdressers never cut my hair as short as I want it.

John Wesley as in, the founder of the Methodist church? That’s AWESOME!

  6. Natasha says:

The hair tip is really useful. The last time I went to the hair-dressers my hairdresser (though lovely) didn’t take off enough hair and I had to get it cut shorter just a few months later. Always better to speak up than leave feeling unhappy, like you said. xxx

I find that if I have 2 or 3 tasks going at the same time then no one task is too dreadful or overwhelming – kinda tricking myself, but it works. If anyone walks in during the time when all the tasks are underway, it looks like I am out of control. However, left alone I get more done because I actually finish it.

Guilty! Got to get smarter on that….

“How to be Smarter: Don’t let the amount of time you dread the task take longer than the task itself.”

    I consider myself recovering…slowly
