How to be Smarter: I read Marry Him by Lori Gottlieb when it came out in hardcover last year (it is now available in paperback); my girlfriends and I passed it around and it sparked some interesting conversations about marriage and long-term relationships in general.
How to be Prettier: I have a friend who paints her nails on her left hand a different color than the nails on her right. She usually chooses polishes that are hues of the same color, like this with this. It looks really cool, and if both colors are soft enough with only a subtle difference, it is work-appropriate in most offices.
How to be (less) Awkward: On your first day of a new job or summer internship, bring both a lunch from home (something that doesn’t need to be refrigerated in case they don’t have an office kitchen) and money to go out to lunch (in case your new co-workers want you to join them on their daily deli run). After the first day, you should have some idea what other people do for lunch and be able to figure out bringing lunch/buying lunch decisions from there.

Brilliant!
That’s pretty much exactly what I did for my first day at work!
I am obsessed with relationship/lifestyle books {way more than one should be…}, so this just added to my collection. I can’t wait to read the pages of that book!
p.s. Speaking of books, have you considered writing a book soon? I think you should. Just sayin’ – you got a way with words and wisdom.
Oh, I love me some Ellen, but that quote kinda makes me sad. Let’s face it, ain’t nothing wrong with short hair (rockin’ it myself at the moment), but all little girls want to be pretty. Most women look at their hair as a sign of beauty (example — the grief cancer survivors experience when they involuntarily lose that crowning glory). The whole point of Barbie is little girls love beauty. It’s engrained in us. Nothing wrong with that. And any attempt at making beauty seem less than worthwhile makes me sad.
Hey, that’s what 99% of blogs are about — aesthetics, right?
I love the idea of being less awkward. When starting a new job I usually just skip bringing a lunch and hope I have time to go grab something. This probably isn’t the best idea. Thanks for the advice, I will def. use this in the future I am sure.
Stopping by from 20SB!
Love the advice on being less awkward – your advice also takes care of the uncertainty of ‘fridge etiquette’ – to label or not to label? You could run the risk of looking too paranoid or if you don’t label, someone stealing your lunch!
I’ve just placed an order for this book since it sparked my interest! Hopefully I can add to its good reviews =)
I totally remember giving my Barbies hair cuts. I can’t say it was a buzz cut, but it sure was short!!!
I am halfway through “Marry Him” based on your recommendation – I have already recommended it to several others! Thanks for the tip!
