Smart, Pretty & Awkward

How to be Smarter: Several studies over the last few years show that chewing gum increases concentration and alertness. So don’t feel bad about chewing a piece while studying for a test or working on a hard assignment for work!

How to be Prettier: To create a flat line down your jeans when wearing tall boots, put a pair of men’s high socks on and tuck your jeans into them, and then pull on the boots.

How to be (less) Awkward: Don’t worry if you miss the 9 o’clock train; you can always run and catch the 11 o’clock. This has less to do with making travel plans, and more about not panicking if you feel like you have “missed” an important life step everyone else is taking. You can always go to grad school; you can always get married; you can always get a really important job. These types of things have no real deadlines and the opportunity to catch a train to one of those destinations will always be there when you are ready.

I must say that today’s “awkward” did make me breathe a sigh of relief. And for the chronically anxious like me, that doesn’t happen often.

  2. Christina says:

I agree with Sanya. The “awkward from today made me feel a lot better about my life and the way it’s headed. Thanks!

I third that… Today’s awkward is super timely since I’m about to start applying for summer positions. Thanks!

Not to be difficult but today’s “awkward” is troublesome to other people. When people are relying on you, it is important to take them into consideration and catch that “9 o’clock train”. I have had to wait for some dawdlers (metaphorically and symbolically) to catch that train for way too long and it is incredibly frustrating and rude on their part.
You can always go to grad school but you can’t be financially dependent on your parents forever. You can’t be irresponsible and have others pick up the pieces.
You can always get married but Mr. Right isnt going to sit around in the balancing act.
You can always get that important job but why waste time goofing off?

@ CP–geez, taking a bit of a negative tack are we? You are absolutely correct on all three points. But let’s try framing them differently. If you miss one 9 o’clock train one time, it is not likely that it will ruin your life forever. If you have a bad habit of missing the 9 o’clock train, then that is something you ought to figure out. Quitting bad habits in my experience is best approached on a slow, gradual basis rather than a fast overwhelming one. I’m not alone in believing this; there are many studies that indicate that humans learn best and retain best on a relatively gradual basis. That’s just how human beings are.

You are correct that you cannot be financially dependent on your parents forever; but bear in mind that I grew up in the 80s and my parents got groceries and financial help from my grandparents, both sets, as young marrieds well into their 30s and beyond.

Most things do NOT exist in harsh shades of black and white; they exist in subtle shades of gray. Not only that, but very few things last “forever” after. Life shifts and changes constantly, for everybody. One thing that is certain in life is flux.
